Why is Transite Duct Dangerous

February 25, 2024 by Wade Pupek

Why is Transite Duct Dangerous

Transite duct is a type of ductwork that was commonly used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in the past. It is made from a mixture of asbestos and cement, which was valued for its durability and heat resistance. However, Transite duct poses health risks due to the asbestos content.

Asbestos fibers, when released into the air, can be inhaled and can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. These fibers are microscopic and can remain airborne for long periods, increasing the risk of exposure.

Due to the health risks associated with asbestos, the use of Transite duct and other asbestos-containing materials has been phased out in many countries. If you suspect that your HVAC system contains Transite duct or other asbestos-containing materials, it’s important to have it inspected by a professional and, if necessary, removed and replaced by a qualified abatement contractor to ensure the safety of occupants.

Do I Have Asbestos Floor Covering?

Do I Have Asbestos Floor Covering?

To determine if you have asbestos floor covering, you will need to have it inspected by a qualified professional. Asbestos was commonly used in a variety of floor materials, including vinyl tiles, sheet flooring, and adhesives, especially in buildings constructed before the 1980s.

Here are some steps you can take to assess the likelihood of having asbestos-containing floor covering:

  • Age of the Building: If your building was constructed before the 1980s, there is a higher likelihood that asbestos-containing materials were used in its construction, including floor coverings.
  • Visual Inspection: Look for signs of old or damaged flooring materials that may contain asbestos. Asbestos vinyl floor tiles were commonly 9 inches by 9 inches and may be in a variety of colors and patterns.
  • Professional Inspection: If you suspect that your floor covering may contain asbestos, it’s best to have it inspected by a qualified asbestos professional. They can take samples for testing and assess the condition of the material.
  • Testing: Asbestos testing involves taking samples of the floor covering and sending them to a laboratory for analysis. The presence of asbestos can only be confirmed through laboratory testing.
  • Safety Precautions: If you suspect that your floor covering contains asbestos, it’s important to take precautions to prevent exposure. Avoid disturbing the material and consult with a professional for guidance on how to manage or remove it safely.

Remember, asbestos-containing materials that are in good condition and undisturbed are generally not a health risk. However, if the material is damaged or deteriorating, it may need to be managed or removed by a professional to prevent exposure to asbestos fibers.
